Artist Statement

IMG_9018What makes my work unique from so many other photographers these days? My artist statement serves the purpose of explaining my personal style and my vision of fine art.

A piece of fine art can be anything from a painting, drawing, sculpture, and in my case, photography. While I have learned a bit about each of these mediums as a basis for the fundamentals of art and design, I chose to focus my efforts in photography.

Photography goes hand in hand with travel and exploration, allowing me to capture a memory instantly. Since I am also an avid outdoorsman, this is the main focus of my work. Some of the remote locations I visit may not see people for weeks, while other locations see people every day.

Taking the photo gives me raw image data, similar to a film negative. This raw data from the camera is only the starting point to the creation of a final piece of art.

Because of the natural characteristics of raw camera data, the image begins as flat and dull when it comes from the camera. Depending on the individual image, I may adjust overall contrast, color, sharpness, and a few other small tweaks. These adjustments turn the flat image in to something more pleasing to look at, and more natural. I do not add or remove odd elements to create a piece that does not truly exist.

My goal when processing this image is to create, by hand, a realistic and believable piece of art. The data from the camera is what I refer to as the image. Only after it is processed does it becomes a piece of art. This piece will be then printed under close inspection, matted, framed, and displayed with the highest quality materials.

IMG_9463I have a great amount of control over an image before taking it, through the choice of lens, exposure, composition, etc. This combined with complete control over the image after it comes out of the camera leads to a very personal interpretation of the photograph. Naturally, my thought, emotions, and memories of the scene play a huge role in the way I manipulate the original image. This interpretation is what makes my pieces unique from other photographers.

Without going in to too many technical details, another goal of my work is to only use a single image to create a piece of artwork. A current trend in photography is to merge multiple images into one to cover a larger dynamic range. I choose to follow a more traditional style and use a single image, which is more than enough to cover the range of nearly any scene I may encounter. This method differs from the process of merging, or stitching, multiple images that I may use to create a panoramic image or to cover a wider field of view.

A third method of merging images together is something that I do use in some of my own work. This involves shooting multiple images, moving slightly with each exposure, and combining them together to create a unique textured appearance that only resembles the original scene in an abstract way.

Overall, the purpose of my work is to share my personal experiences, emotions, and thoughts through photography by creating a piece of fine art that can be enjoyed by people anywhere.
